Mio marito.
“Oh, no" dice, sinceramente comprensivo.

"Grazie" mormoro.
Cap se ne va e io non mangio il suo cibo. Mi rimetto a dormire.

“Tate”
Gentile e rilassante e... "Miles?"
Un pollice scorre sulle mie labbra. "Qui.
È stanco come me, i miei occhi assorbono ogni momento, rifiutandosi di chiudersi.
"Torna a dormire" sussurra.

"Andiamo a letto".
Almeno ho ancora i miei boxer addosso.
Costringo me stesso a pensare qualcosa'altro in modo che possa addormentarsi.

mentre in qualche modo precipito
profondamente
dentro la sua anima
Dentro di lei
Innamorato.

Rimango sopra di lei,
dentro di lei,
anche dopo che abbiamo finito.
Le nostre labbra continuano a muoversi,
Cercandosi l'un l'altra,
Prendendo,
Reclamando,
Amando.

“Ti amo, Miles” sussurra.
Lo dice ogni giorno.
A volte più di una volta.
E ogni giorno le rispondo “Anche io ti amo”
proprio come ringrazio Dio
- non per quando siamo atterrati nell'amore -
ma per
quando
abbiamo
decollato.

VERSIONE INGLESE

TATE ARCHER
I can hear my phone ringing but there’s only one small part of me that cares enough to answer it. The part that knows it might be Miles. He’s the only thing that could make me stop praying for death at this point.
My shift ended at seven yesterday morning but the illness I caught during it is alive and well. I had a fever of 102 when I walked through our front door yesterday and nothing I’ve done has helped. It got to a point where I couldn’t even make it to the refrigerator without taking three breaks. I gave up this morning and decided I would just let this flu kill me.
So far I haven’t died, and my phone is still ringing, reminding me of the small part of me that can make me smile in the midst of hell. My husband. The man I haven’t seen in twelve days, thanks to our non-cooperative shifts this month.
I locate my cell phone with the tips of my fingers. It’s over two feet away from me, so I pull it an inch closer and slide my finger across the screen. I try to remember where the speaker icon is and tap around the phone screen.
“Hello?” My voice is so weak I question if it was only in my head.
But then his familiar voice carries across my bed and meets my ears when he says, “Tate?” It’s the first time I’ve even thought about smiling since the flu hit me.
“Here,” I whisper.
“It’s so quiet.”
I debate responding to that, but it wasn’t a question. I only have enough strength to answer questions.
“Babe?” He sounds worried.
I lift my head so my pathetic voice will reach the phone. “Sick.” I keep it short and sweet so he’ll understand. “Flu.” I take a breath and my head falls back onto the pillow.
“Oh, no,” he says, genuinely sympathetic. He sighs into the phone and he doesn’t have to translate that sigh for me. I know he’s frustrated that he can’t do anything for me. He’s in Maine or Florida or somewhere as far as the United States can get him from me, so there’s nothing he can do.
But his phone call is enough, honestly. It feels so good to hear his voice. We’ve been married for more than a year now. 455 days to be exact. And thanks to our schedules, we’ve spent less than 100 of those days together. Which is why my head still swims when he walks through the door to our apartment. And when he calls me. And when he smiles at me. And any time I think about him.
“Is there anything I can do?”
I want to say, “Yes. Hijack an airplane and fly home and crawl in bed with me.”
But instead I just whisper, “No. I just need rest.”
He sighs again and says, “I don’t want to keep you on the phone. You sound so tired. I’m about to take off and I just wanted to hear your voice. I love you.”
“Too,” is all I manage to say in return. I can hear the phone cut out and I try to sink back into sleep again.

***

“Tate.”
I feel a cold rag against my forehead. And then liquid against my lips.
“Young lady, you better drink up. That boy of yours made me promise I wouldn’t leave you until you had two glasses of water.”
Cap.
I open my eyes and he’s sitting next to me on the bed, tilting my head up to meet a glass full of ice cold water. I think I smile, relieved to see him, and then I take a sip. I try to lie back but he forces me to sit up. “Try to drink all of it. Can’t have you getting dehydrated on my watch.”
I take the cup from him with shaky hands.
He stands up, which takes a lot of effort for him. He hobbles around the room, grunting as he bends to pick up various items of clothing.
Clothing.
Crap. Am I even wearing clothes?
I look down and thankfully, I wasn’t too sick to be prepared with one of Miles’s t-shirts. I finish the glass of water and set it on the nightstand. “Thank you,” I choke out.
Cap nods as he drops all my dirty clothes in the hamper. “You eat anything today?”
I shake my head. “Starve a fever, feed a cold.” I drop back down on my pillow and roll over. I pull the covers up over my head and pray to be put out of my misery.
“Now come on, Tate. You’re a nurse. You know that’s just an old wives tale.” Cap leaves the room only to come back a few minutes later. “Found some crackers and fruit. Try to take a few bites.” I hear him set the tray on the nightstand.
“I will later. I promise.”
He huffs and then says, “Alright, then. I’ll come back later and check on you. The boy told me to tell you he’ll call you later tonight.”
“Thank you,” I mutter.
Cap leaves and I don’t eat his food. I go back to sleep.

***

“Tate.”
Once again a cold rag is pressed against my forehead.
But this time it feels different. A hand is running through my hair. Gentle and soothing and, “Miles?”
A thumb slides across my lips. “Here. Take a drink,” he says. He slips his hand behind my neck and lifts me toward a glass. When I’m done taking a sip I open my eyes, just as Miles gently lowers my head back to my pillow. His blue eyes are full of concern but his lips pull into a smile when we make eye contact. Miraculously, I smile, too.
I don’t even ask him why he’s here or how or for how long. I just reach up to where his hand is stroking my cheek and I grab it and squeeze it.
He runs the cold rag over my face and then sets it on the nightstand. He stands up and begins to unbutton his uniform. As tired as I am, my eyes soak up every moment—refusing to close. I’m questioning if he’s real. I know fever can cause hallucinations.
He slips off his shirt and then unbuckles his belt, letting his pants drop to the floor.
When my eyes make it to his face again, I can see the exhaustion in his expression. “Have you slept yet?” I ask him.
He gives me a reassuring smile as he lowers himself onto the bed beside me. “I’m about to,” he whispers, sliding an arm under my neck. He wraps himself around me and presses his lips to my cheek. “Go back to sleep,” he whispers. “I’m right here if you need anything.”
Every muscle in my body has been aching and screaming at me for the past twenty-four hours, but his presence alone miraculously silences them. Long enough for me to feel the first moment of peace since this illness hit. All I feel are his arms gripped tightly around me, his mouth briefly against mine and his warm breath move to my ear when he whispers, “I missed you.”
I missed him, too.
I miss him always. Even when I have him.

MILES ARCHER
I fold the last of the laundry and put it away. On my way through the kitchen, I stop and pour her a glass of orange juice.
When I called her this morning, I’d never heard her sound so sick. I immediately found a replacement, called Cap to keep an eye on her until I could get home and then hopped the first flight back to Cali.
In all the time I’ve known Tate, I’ve never known her to be sick like this. And we’ve been married more than a year. 455 days to be exact.
I doubt Tate or I would keep up with how many days we’ve been married if it weren’t for the gift Ian gave us for our wedding. It’s a solar clock that has our wedding date engraved on it. It also keeps a count of how many days, hours and minutes it’s been since we said, “I do.” He claims he bought it for me so I’d never forget my wedding anniversary, but the gift really wasn’t necessary. It’s a date I’ll never have trouble remembering.
I close the door to our bedroom to keep the light out. It’s almost midnight and even though I managed to get her to eat a few hours ago, her fever hasn’t gone down much. Which means she needs the rest.
I glance at the bed and the covers are thrown back and she’s no longer there. I set the cup of orange juice on the nightstand and make my way to the bathroom. When I open the door, she’s standing at the sink, wetting her face with a wash cloth. She’s wearing one of my old band t-shirts. There are holes all in it and I really probably should have thrown it out a long time ago, but I keep it specifically for this purpose. It looks sexy as hell on her.
Our eyes meet in the mirror when I walk up behind her, snaking my arms around her waist. I kiss her shoulder. “Feel any better?”
She frowns and looks at herself in the mirror. “No worse than I look.”
I try to see what she’s seeing, but I’m blinded to it, I guess. Even with hair that hasn’t been brushed in two days and teeth that haven’t been brushed in almost as long, I can’t keep the twitch inside my boxer shorts from hiding what she does to me when she thinks she’s at her worst. I press a kiss to the top of her head. “Want me to run you a bath? It might make you feel better.”
She nods with a small smile. “Thank you.”
She finishes washing her face and brushes her teeth while I get a bath ready for her. I make sure the water isn’t too hot and then I set out some towels while she pulls off her t-shirt. She isn’t wearing anything underneath it and I can’t divert my eyes while I help her into the tub.
I think this is the first time I’ve ever walked through the front door that we didn’t immediately end up in bed together. Or on the couch. Or against the kitchen counter. Or on the table. Neither of us has figured out the key to patience when we’re alone in a room. Especially with as little time as we actually spend together. I don’t work as many hours as I did before she came into my life, but I’m definitely away from her more than I want to be. And in this case, more than I need to be. I love my job but I love my wife more, which is exactly why I changed my schedule today. I don’t want her alone when she’s sick.
She leans her head back against the tub and settles into the water with a sigh. “God, this feels good,” she whispers, allowing her eyes to fall shut.
I take a seat on the edge of the tub and reach for a wash cloth, wetting it under the faucet. “You need anything?”
She opens her eyes and I hand her the wet rag. “Maybe change the sheets on the bed?” she asks. “I want to get these germs out of this apartment. The last thing you need is to get sick.”
I shake my head. “No, the last thing I need is for my wife to worry about me when she’s this sick.”
I spend the fifteen minutes she’s in the bath getting the bed ready and spoon feeding her medicine and then forcing her to drink ice water. When she’s ready to get out of the bath, I help her up and wrap a towel around her. She presses her face against my bare chest and her whole body sighs against mine.
“I can’t believe you came home,” she whispers. She lifts her face until I’m looking down into her eyes. I lean forward to kiss her but she turns her head and my lips meet her cheek instead. “I don’t want you to get sick.”
I grasp her face and tilt it back up to mine. “What’s the worst that could happen? I’d have to stay home and be with you while I recover?” She smiles at the thought and I lower my mouth to hers. “I’ve never wanted germs more than I want yours right now.” I catch her bottom lip between both of mine and kiss her softly. When I pull back her eyes are still closed. I can’t tell if it’s from exhaustion or the kiss, but either way she needs more rest. I reach down and wrap my arms behind her knees and lift her up seamlessly. “Let’s go to bed.”
She tucks her arms and face against my chest as I carry her to the bedroom. Her skin is like fire against mine. When I lower her to the bed, the cool air meets the parts of me she was just pressed against, highlighting the contrast between our current body temperatures.
I turn off the lamp and scoot in behind her, pulling the covers up over both of us. I can feel her shivering and I feel completely helpless. Other than wrapping myself around her, which is exactly what I do, there’s not a damn thing I can do to help her feel better. Besides, she knows more than I do what would make her feel better. She’s the medical expert.
I kiss her shoulder and then settle into her pillow, resting my hand on my thigh. I’ve had the flu before and I remember how it makes every part of a person’s body ache—even their skin. I doubt she wants me touching her right now, no matter how much I want to sooth her pain.
As if she can read my mind, she reaches behind her and grabs my hand, pulling it over and around her.
“It feels better when you touch me,” she whispers.
I smile and nuzzle my face against her hair. “I’m happy to oblige,” I say, running my hand up her stomach. I continue to run my hand over her, keeping my touch confined to her stomach and hip and arm. As much as it’s killing me being next to her knowing there won’t be any relief while she recovers, I don’t want her to think that’s where my mind is going at all. That’s the last thing she needs right now, so I try to think of anything and everything unrelated to her while she falls asleep.
I spend the next few minutes mentally going over my flight check routine so I won’t be filled with thoughts of what her skin feels like against my hand, but it doesn’t help. Just having her near me in this bed makes every part of me physically react to her, which can’t be comfortable for her with me spooning her like this.
I swear, my body still acts like a teenage boy in the throes of puberty when I’m near her, even after being married to her for over a year. At least I still have my boxers on. I start to roll over onto my back to allow her to sleep, but she grips my hand and says, “Stay.”
I laugh a little, but squeeze her tight, relieved she’s craving my touch as much as I’m craving to touch her. “Okay, but I can’t be held responsible for what you do to me.”
When I press into her, she moans, making it even worse.
I force myself to think about something else so she can fall asleep. I think about all the things I hate. Flight delays, cancellations, turbulence, the rancid smell of First Class breakfast on an empty stomach, burnt airplane coffee.
My fingers are splayed out against her stomach as I do my best to respect the fact that she’s sick. Her hand finds mine and she threads our fingers together. “Miles?” she whispers.
I press a kiss to her ear. “What do you need?”
She drags my hand down a couple of inches. “I need sleep,” she says, positioning my hand dangerously close to where the edge of her panties would be if she didn’t just get out of the bath. “And I need electrolytes,” she adds. She pulls her fingers from mine and then her hand comes down on top of mine, sliding my hand between her legs. “And you.”
The warmth against my hand makes it impossible to maintain my composure. I naturally roll my hips against her and then squeeze my eyes shut with a soft groan. “Tate, we’re not having sex right now. You need to rest…”
“Please,” she whispers, spreading her legs slightly, allowing my hand to perfectly cup the apex of her thighs.
I lift my head off my pillow and lean over her far enough to reach her mouth. “How about we compromise?” I whisper. “You close your eyes and rest…” I kiss the corner of her mouth. “And I’ll take care of you.”
She nods with another moan, opening her eyes slightly. “But kiss me.”
That I can do.
I lean forward and press my lips to hers. The contrasting temperatures of our mouths is like ice being thrown into a fire. I’m still spooning her and it’s taking too much effort for her to tilt her face far enough to kiss me fully, so she rolls onto her back, parting both her lips and her legs for me.
I slip my tongue in her mouth and I’m met with a soft sigh. Everything about her drives me insane, but the way she sighs while I’m kissing her is one of my favorite things. She lifts her hips against my hand and I give her the relief she craves, sliding my finger down her center.
Part of me feels guilty for not pushing her to rest, but most of me is relieved she needs this right now because otherwise I would never experience the beautiful side of fever. My hand is met with the intense heat of her body and it’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. I close my eyes and press my forehead against the side of her head, imagining what it would feel like to make love to her right now. To climb on top of her and settle between the heat of her legs, pushing into the warmth my hand is now exploring.
I think I whisper the word, “Goddamn,” without meaning to.
Tate opens her eyes and looks up at me with slightly parted lips. She sucks in small gasps of air and releases them in time with my movement against her. She watches me with hooded eyes as I focus intently on her mouth, waiting for the moment when she collapses around my fingers.
“Miles,” she whispers breathlessly. “Make love to me.”
I shake my head but it takes every ounce of willpower in me not to immediately accommodate her. “Tomorrow,” I whisper, kissing her chin, dragging my lips down her neck. I kiss her scorching skin until I reach her breasts. I lay my head against her chest and continue to enjoy the feel of her as she presses into my hand.
I can feel the beat of her heart against my cheek as it crashes wildly against the walls of her chest. She does anything but relax. She begins to dig her heels into the mattress as she arches her back. Her arms come down around me and she grips me tightly, pulling me closer.
I close my mouth over her nipple as she begins to fall apart beneath me. I revel in it, soaking up every moan as it passes all too quickly. Her exhaustion is evident in her quiet, breathless moans and the whispered, “I love you,” that passes her lips. I wait for her to relax and be overcome with sleep, but she continues to dig her heels restlessly into the mattress as she pulls my face back to hers. The force with which she kisses me tells me everything I need to know.
That wasn’t enough.
She pulls my arm, wanting me on top of her. She doesn’t have to pull very hard because I slide over her with ease. She wraps her legs around me and I get completely lost in the heat of her mouth, the moan slipping up her throat, the hands pulling me out of my boxers.
When she guides me inside of her, I’m racked with guilt for the pleasure I’m getting from her fever. But I’ve never felt anything like this moment as I slowly push into her, completely overcome by the warmth surrounding me.
“Tate.”
When I say her name, it’s a “thank you” an “I love you” and a “holy fuck” wrapped up in that one single word.
I say it over
“Tate,”
and over
“Tate,”
and over
“Tate,”
as I make love
to
her.

“Tate.”
She catches her name with her mouth against mine
and we hold our kiss
while I somehow fall
deeper
into her soul
Into her
In love.

I remain on top of her,
inside of her,
long after we’ve finished.
Our lips are still moving,
Searching each other,
Taking,
Needing,
Loving.

Her last kiss is gentle and tired
as she allows her arms to drop beside her head.
She sighs like I’m the only medicine that could
ever cure her.
I kiss her cheek again and then leave the warmth of her,
rolling onto my side
to lay beside her.
I press a flat hand to her stomach
and I quietly wonder if this is the moment
when she and I
and our love for each other
will create something even greater
than the two of us could ever be.

I quietly wonder if this is just the beginning
of even more of the
beautiful
that she has pulled from my pain.

“I love you, Miles,” she whispers.
She says it every day.
Sometimes more than once.
And every day I say, “I love you, too,”
as I thank God
-not for when we fell in love-
but for
when
we
flew.
